The Charles J. and Burton S. August Family Foundation Awards WXXI Reachout Radio with $5,000 Grant

July 25, 2005 (Rochester, NY) – Reachout Radio, WXXi’s 24-hour radio reading service for people who have an inability to read or use standard printed materials as a result of a physical, visual or reading disability, has received a grant of $5,000 from the Charles J. and Burton S. August Family Foundation. The grant will be used to purchase a customized computer workstation equipped with the ENCO digital audio processing system and basic office programs that are accessible for WXXI’s radio board operator Andy Shields, who is blind.
WXXI Reachout Radio is provided in partnership with ABVI-Goodwill Industries of Greater Rochester. The radio reading service provides 24-hour per day readings of local and national newspapers, magazines, and books. WXXI Reachout Radio is closed circuit and is accessible through a specially tuned radio which is provided free of charge to eligible applicants. Reachout Radio is one of more than 120 radio-reading services available through the United States that are members of the International Association of Audio Information Services (IAAIS).
The Charles J. and Burton S. August Foundation supports annual campaigns, building funds, capital campaigns, emergency funds, equipment, operating funds, program funding, scholarships and seed funding.
