May 23, 2006 (Rochester, NY) — WXXI, the University of Rochester Medical Center and a panel of nationally recognized experts from Strong Heart & Vascular Center will host the first Second Opinion Health Conference on Friday, June 9 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry. Senator Jim Alesi is the Honorary Chairman of this heart-healthy conference that features keynote speaker Peter Salgo, practicing physician at Columbia University Medical Center in NYC and host of the national healthcare series Second Opinion. In addition to health screenings, a heart-healthy lunch and giveaways, the conference will feature six breakout sessions presented by experts from Strong Heart & Vascular Center and centered on developing communication skills to better deal with healthcare providers. Dr. Louis Papa discusses the non-negotiating rules of doctor-patient communications. Dr. Geoffrey Morris explains how to get a second opinion. Dr. Gladys Velarde and Dr. Peter Knight talk about heart disease prevention and intervention. Dr. Mark Taubman, Division of Cardiology Chief, discusses the latest research in heart disease. Dr. John Bisognano and Laurie Kopin explain how to interpret blood pressure, cholesterol count and body mass index numbers. Mary Beth Klofas and Marilyn Rosen offer tips on how to evaluate health information on the Internet in a hands-on session.

The Second Opinion Health Conference was inspired by the national healthcare series Second Opinion, which is produced by WXXI, the University of Rochester Medical Center and West 175 Productions and funded by the Blue Cross Blue Shield Association. The weekly series, seen on more than 200 PBS stations across the country, engages nationally recognized healthcare professionals and patients in a fast-paced, provocative discussion of real-life medical cases. Second Opinion airs on WXXI-TV 21 (cable 11) on Saturdays at 3 p.m. and Sundays at 1:30 p.m.
