Rochester, New York (October 20, 2006) – WXXI’s Candidate Free Airtime, a unique opportunity for political candidates to present the essence of their campaigns and stance on the issues, premieres on WXXI-TV 21 (cable 11) on Sunday, October 22 at 12:30 p.m. with Part 1. Part 2 and 3 will air Sundays, October 29 and November 5 at 12:30 p.m. on WXXI-TV 21 (cable 11). These 30-minute programs feature 2-minute, unedited messages from selected candidates in the area who choose to participate. The programs feature New York State Senate and Assembly candidates, area Congressional candidates and candidates from a handful of open City and County races. It will also air consecutively on City 12, cable channel 12 for City residents, on Sunday, October 29 at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, November 4 at 6:30 p.m. and Sunday, November 5 at 10:30 a.m. The radio version of Candidate Free Airtime will air on AM 1370 during Morning Edition (9:20 a.m.) and All Things Considered (6:20 p.m.)throughout the week of October 23. Statements from all participating candidateswill be made available as MP3 downloads at Transcripts will also be posted at the same web address.

Now in its eighth year, Candidate Free Air Time provides selected local candidates with the opportunity to share their views with the Rochester community through WXXI. Each candidate is given two minutes to read a prepared statement on air, a segment that would normally cost thousands of dollars. In this way, WXXI gives each and every candidate an equal opportunity to connect with local citizens.
