Rochester, New York (January 18, 2006) – Residents at The Friendly Home, a 202-bed nursing facility in Brighton, now have access to the audio of many local and national newspapers, magazines and books, through Channel 3 on their TVs in their rooms. That’s where residents can listen to Reachout Radio, WXXI’s 24-hour radio- reading service for those with visual impairments or blindness. “Our members love it,” said John Gagnon, The Friendly Home’s Assistant Administrator. “Access in every room gives all members a chance to get the news without having to ask for assistance. They are able to stay in touch with the community and access written information independently.”

Provided in partnership with ABVI-Goodwill, WXXI Reachout Radio is closed-circuit and is accessible through specially-tuned radios that are loaned, free of charge, to eligible applicants. The Friendly Home uses just one of these radios to reach its 202 residents by patching it into the home’s in-house system and putting the audio on one of the available channels.
“We’re thrilled to have Reachout Radio on the in-house system at The Friendly Home, as well as at Linden Knoll,” explains Ruth Phinney, WXXI Reachout Radio Director. “By broadcasting throughout the entire home we’re able to connect with more people in a more cost-effective manner than we can with individual closed-circuit radios. Now everyone at The Friendly Home has access!”

In addition to The Friendly Home, Phinney hopes more retirement facilities and nursing homes consider using in-house broadcast systems to share Reachout Radio with residents. “Through the years we have heard from many facility staff that Reachout Radio is a wonderful way to keep their residents alert, involved and connected with life,” Phinney added.
In addition, residents of Linden Knoll, a senior living residence located adjacent to The Friendly Home at 81 Linden Avenue,~have the option of subscribing to The Friendly Home's satellite TV service. It gives these independent seniors (including members of Linden Knoll's Low Vision Support Group) easy access to Reachout broadcasts via their television.
The Friendly Home is a non-profit, non-denominational nursing care and rehabilitation facility for older adults. It offers a variety of health care services including 24-hour skilled nursing care, rehabilitation, and specialized care for individuals with Alzheimer’s and related dementias, and hospice care.

Reachout Radio is one of more than 120 radio-reading services available through the United States that are members of the International Association of Audio Information Services (IAAIS). For more information or to find out how to apply for this free service, call (585) 258-0333 or visit
