August 30, 2006 (Rochester, NY) – In conjunction with the Speaking of Women’s Health Conference, hosted by WXXI and held on Friday, September 15, 2006 at the Rochester Riverside Convention Center, WXXI is pleased to announce Foodlink as the 2006 Speaking of Women’s Health Community Investment recipient. Speaking of Women’s Health is dedicated to reinvesting in the communities where conferences and events are held. In support of the Rochester community, WXXI will produce a public service announcement for Foodlink that will help to raise awareness about the local foodbank and reach out to those in the community that can support this human service organization.

Foodlink, which was founded in 1976 by Tom Ferraro, provides food, nutrition, education, and resources in Central and Western New York. As a member of America’s Second Harvest, Foodlink rescues and redistributes more than 7.5 million pounds of food valued at over $12 million dollars annually to over 550 human service agencies in the Genesee Valley and Finger Lakes region. While the distribution of food to reduce hunger remains the foundation of Foodlink’s activities, the vision is more holistic: to end hunger, build self-sufficiency, and foster nutritional wellness. This is accomplished through a host of programs which address health, wellness, and community economic development to impact on the root causes of hunger and build a healthy community.

Speaking of Women’s Health is presented in Rochester by WXXI, and is sponsored locally by Strong Health, Senator Joseph Robach, KeyBank, PHA Health, Wellness and Fitness Center, 13 WHAM TV, WHAM 1180 and The Drive 100.5. National sponsors include P&G, Wal-Mart, Lifetime, American Greetings, Benadryl, Listerine Antiseptic, Purell, Kellogg’s, Hanes, Schick Intuition, L’Oreal Paris, Maybelline New York, Garnier, and Cadbury Schweppes Americas Beverages, Stryker Orthopeadics, Merck.
