Rochester, New York (June 21, 2007) –WXXI, The Democrat and Chronicle and 13 WHAM TV, collaborators of the Voice of the Voter (VOV) project designed to engage citizens in the political process, are pleased to announce WDKX 103.9 FM as its newest partner. VOV was formed in the mid 1990s in an effort to offer a forum in which regular citizens could deliberate and discuss issues that affect them.

As Rochester’s only R&B station, WDKX will help to expand the footprint of VOV. WDKX will participate in and promote awareness of VOV forums, debates and other events that connect citizens to political candidates. Some of these events will be broadcast on WDKX. In addition, the station will collaborate on unique programming designed to inform and engage local citizens in the elections process.  WDKX is also joining the other VOV media partners at monthly citizen deliberations, to hear firsthand what is on the minds of voters as the 2007 election cycle gets underway.

Each spring VOV participants begin meeting monthly to determine what local, state, and national issues are most important to them and their families. Issue polls often serve as the starting point for VOV deliberations. The collaborators then facilitate access to candidates and lawmakers by putting these decision-makers in community forums—many of which are broadcast on television and radio. Candidates and lawmakers benefit from hearing the concerns and questions of the community.

The VOV project has its roots in the 1993 City of Rochester mayoral race. In response to the retirement of a 20-year incumbent mayor, coupled with five viable candidates for the seat, the Democrat and Chronicle and WXXI-TV and AM 1370, partnered to present a series of four two-hour live primetime debates on four consecutive evenings using four separate sites in the city. The two media partners worked together on campaign coverage and used the then “unique format” of including citizens in the debate to ask questions of the five Mayoral candidates.

VOV is supported in part by Rochester Area Community Foundation.
