HOMEWORK HOTLINE RECEIVES A 2008 PARENTS’ CHOICE AWARD

(Rochester, New York) September 4, 2008 – Homework Hotline, WXXI’s homework help television show, earned a 2008 Parents’ Choice Silver Honor Award for its companion Website, <homeworkhotline.org>.

“Any student stumped by homework or just needing a little extra help in a certain subject area will appreciate the resources this easy-to-navigate, visually-appealing site offers,” writes Mike Jovel, a Flash Designer/Developer and Principal of Glu Design who reviewed <homeworkhotline.org> as a judge for the awards competition. “Kids struggling with math can watch informative (but never boring) videos specific to their trouble area, whether it’s algebra, geometry or word problems.”

The site features searchable videos of actual math and science homework problems that are solved by students and master teachers. Students and parents can also search for segments on science, health, New York State history, the environment and language arts. "This award was made possible by our collaboration with creative students at Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT), and we're proud to share this honor with the entire Rochester community," said Norm Silverstein, President of WXXI. The site was designed by RIT’s New Media Interactive Development students, under the direction of WXXI, and launched in September 2007. In addition to the searchable videos, the site also hosts two interactive games, homework help tips for kids and parents, and connections to educational resources across New York State.
<Homeworkhotline.org> is the companion Website for Homework Hotline, a live call-in show where kids receive help with homework problems right on the air. Teachers from Rochester Dial-A-Teacher and New York City Dial-A-Teacher take the calls and send them to WXXI studios, where master teachers help kids work through their homework assignments live on television. Produced by WXXI, Homework Hotline airs on public television throughout New York State during the school year, and airs Monday through Thursday at 5:30 p.m., beginning September 15 on WXXI-TV 21 (cable 11). Homework Hotline is funded by the New York State United Teachers (NYSUT).

The Parents' Choice Awards program honors the best material for children: books, toys, music and storytelling, magazines, software, videogames, television and websites. Parents' Choice Foundation's panels of educators, scientists, performing artists, librarians, parents and, yes, kids themselves, identify the very best products for children of different ages and backgrounds, and of varied skill and interest levels.
