Rochester, New York (July 2, 2008) – WXXI-TV’s Homework Hotline, and Taste of New York each brought home an award for Excellence in Broadcasting from the New York State Broadcasters Association (NYSBA). WXXI’s Vice President of Television Elissa Orlando accepted the award at the 42nd Annual Awards for Excellence in Broadcasting at Lake George in Bolton Landing on June 26, 2008.

Taste of New York, produced in partnership with the New York Wine & Grape Foundation, received the NYSBA Award in the “Outstanding Locally Produced TV Show” category. Hosted by television lifestyle host Susan Hunt and New York Wine & Culinary Center’s executive chef Dan Martello, the show takes place both on location throughout the State and at the New York Wine & Culinary Center in Canandaigua, NY. Taste of New York airs Saturdays at 2:30 p.m. on WXXI-TV 21 (cable 11).

Homework Hotline earned a NYSBA Award in the “Outstanding Individual Program or Series Designed for Children” category. This is the seventh award Homework Hotline has garnered from NYSBA in this category. Geared to children in grades five through 12, Homework Hotline provides the tools students need to succeed with homework and supports academic achievement across a variety of New York State Learning Standards. The program is produced in partnership with the New York City and Rochester Dial-A-Teacher programs, which staff phone banks across the State – enabling children to call in for homework help. Selected students have their homework problems worked out live on the air by Homework Hotline teachers/hosts who are experts in math and science. Homework Hotline airs on public television stations throughout New York State during the school year, and in Rochester, airs Monday through Friday at 5:30 p.m. on WXXI-TV 21 (cable 11). Homework Hotline is funded by the New York State United Teachers.

The New York State Broadcasters Association’s Annual Awards Competition encourages professional performance and recognizes outstanding achievement among NYSBA member radio and TV stations in our State.
