Statewide Live Telecast Airs October 10 at 9:30 a.m. on WXXI-DT21.2

(Rochester, New York) October 2, 2008 – The New York State Governor’s Summit on Student Engagement and Dropout Prevention will be held on Friday, October 10, 2008 at Nazareth College (Shults Center) in Rochester, New York, and will be broadcast live on WXXI-PBS World (cable 524/DT21.2) and streamed online at beginning at 9:30 a.m. The Office of Governor David Paterson and public broadcasting stations of New York State (NYS) will partner to bring this interactive Summit meeting on education to audiences across the State. The Summit’s purpose is to shed light on the staggering high school dropout rate and lack of college readiness, and provide a forum to discuss policy change.

“Because of rising dropout rates, all New Yorkers have a duty to develop innovative ways to engage young people in their schools and communities," said Governor Paterson. “As leaders from the corporate, nonprofit, public and education sectors join together for New York State’s Summit on Student Engagement and Dropout Prevention, I encourage all of New York’s students, teachers, parents and administrators to tune in and join us in this discussion, so we can provide a better, brighter future for the young people of our state.”

The Summit will lead elected officials, administrators, educators, parents, and the private sector and youth in the exploration and development of an action plan based on the Five Promises of America’s Promise Alliance. America’s Promise is the nation’s largest partnership alliance committed to ensuring that children receive the fundamental resources needed to lead successful, healthy and productive lives.

The Summit’s master of ceremonies will be Duffy Palmer, Interim Deputy Secretary for Education, who will be joined by two youth emcees – Devan Caldwell, a student at Monroe Community College and Jahziel Lazala, a student at SUNY Binghamton. Also speaking will be NYS Governor David Paterson, NYS Commissioner of Education Richard Mills, Superintendent of the Rochester City School District Jean-Claude Brizard and Nazareth College President Dr. Daan Bravemen. Pedro Noguera, Ph.D., a professor in the Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development at New York University will present the keynote address entitled, “Our Promise for the Future: Meeting the Challenge”. The program will conclude with an interactive forum with six student panelists.

Five hundred guests, including 100 youth from across New York State, are expected to participate in the Summit while scores of viewers will tune in for the 2 ½-hour live telecast, which begins at 9:30 a.m. on WXXI-PBS World (cable 524/DT21.2). Hosted by WXXI-Rochester’s Managing Editor Julie Philipp, the telecast will be distributed by NYS Interconnect, a fiber optic interconnection that enables New York's public broadcasting stations to deliver innovative, live educational and public service programming to the entire state in the most economical fashion.
