WXXI PROVIDES EXTENSIVE COVERAGE OF THE NATION’S ECONOMIC CONDITIONS AND WHAT IT MEANS FOR ROCHESTER

(Rochester, New York) October 14, 2008 – As Rochesterians try to decipher what the nation’s economic conditions mean to them, WXXI’s Center for Public Affairs dedicates the airtime needed to help its community understand the issues.

Since the financial crisis hit in September, WXXI’s daily radio talk show 1370 Connection has invited some of today’s leading financial experts on the show – including Pulitzer Prize winning financial journalist David Cay Johnston and economist Cliff Smith of the University of Rochester’s Simon School. Joining host Bob Smith this week are: Market analyst T.C. Lewis of Greentree Capital (10/15 at 1 p.m.), economist Kathy Bromley of Monroe Community College’s business and economics department (10/16 at 1 p.m.) and Cornell University law and business professor Robert Hockett (10/17 at 1 p.m.). 1370 Connection airs daily from 12 Noon to 2 p.m. and repeats from 9 p.m. to 11 p.m. on AM1370/HD91.5-2, and can be streamed over the Internet at WXXI.org. In addition to WXXI’s special financial coverage, Rochesterians can also tune in to AM1370/HD91.5-2 for national economic news from NPR with Morning Edition (5 a.m. to 10 a.m.), All Things Considered (4 p.m. to 6 p.m.), and Marketplace (6:30 p.m.).  WXXI-TV 21’s nightly news schedule of BBC World News at 6 p.m., Nightly Business Report at 6:30 p.m. and The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer at 7 p.m. also provides extensive coverage on the economic conditions.

WXXI’s Voice of the Voter initiative will also host two State Senate debates focusing on the economy, with WXXI’s Julie Philipp moderating. On Friday, October 17 at 8:30 p.m., WXXI-TV 21 (cable 11) will bring viewers a debate between 55th State Senate District candidates Jim Alesi and David Nachbar. A radio version of this debate can be heard on AM1370/HD91.5-2 Saturday, October 18 at 6:30 p.m. On Friday, October 24 at 8:30 p.m., 56th State Senate District candidates Joe Robach and Richard Dollinger will debate on WXXI-TV 21 (cable 11).
