WXXI NAMES SUZANNE GOUVERNET ITS ASSOCIATE OF THE YEAR

(Rochester, New York) November 5, 2009 – WXXI presented Suzanne Gouvernet with the 2009 Associate of the Year Award, which recognizes those individuals who have made significant contributions in support of WXXI, its broadcasts, and operations. Mrs. Gouvernet received the honor at the Associates Society dinner held at the Bamba Bistro on Thursday, October 15, 2009. More than 100 WXXI supporters attended the annual event with special guest speaker Vivian Schiller, NPR’s President and CEO.

Mrs. Gouvernet and her late husband Gerard moved to Rochester from New York City in 1982 when Mr. Gouvernet joined the foreign language faculty at SUNY Geneseo. The couples’ widespread generosity has touched many local arts organizations including WXXI. The Gouvernets were major donors to WXXI’s Capital Campaign that funded WXXI’s digital transition. Through the Gouvernet Arts Fund at the Community Foundation, Mrs. Gouvernet has also supported Backstage Pass on Classical 91.5, a live, hour-long radio series that is committed to highlighting performing artists – giving listeners the opportunity to hear local and visiting musicians performing live.

In addition to her work with WXXI, Mrs. Governet currently serves on the Rochester Area Community Foundation’s Programs-Distributions Committee and is a member of the  Arts & Cultural Council for Greater Rochester and Geva Theatre Center Boards of Directors.

To commemorate the 2009 Associate of the Year, a magnolia tree has been planted at Highland Park in honor of Mrs. Gouvernet’s dedication to WXXI. Her name has also been inscribed on WXXI’s Associate of the Year plaque, which includes the names of other WXXI friends including Harry P. Truehart III, Dr. Nancy Perkins Weyl, Ted Shepard, Dick Eisenhart, B. Thomas Golisano, George M. Ewing, Sr., and Ed Saphar.
