WXXI’s National Financial Literacy Series Tops Nickelodeon and Disney

(Rochester, New York) October 29, 2009 – Biz Kid$, public television’s Emmy Award-winning financial literacy series, co-produced by WXXI Public Broadcasting and Biz Kid$, LLP, received the Environmental Media Award in the category for “Children’s Live Action,” beating out shows from Nickelodeon and Disney.

Biz Kid$  was awarded for its episode, “The Green Economy & You,” which illustrated to kids how businesses can “go green” and included stories of young entrepreneurs, such as a 12-year old who sells eco-friendly lunch bags. Also nominated in the category were Disney’s Suite Life on Deck and Nickelodeon’s iCarly. This award comes on the heels of Biz Kid$’s Emmy Award. In August 2009,it took home a Daytime Emmy for Outstanding Achievement in “Main Title and Graphic Design” at the 36th annual Daytime Entertainment Creative Arts Emmy® Awards.

Biz Kid$ is a fun, fast-paced public television series that teaches kids the importance of budgeting, saving, and giving back to the community. The series also shows them how to use credit wisely and how to build a business. Whether a handbag designer, podcast host or a dog groomer, the young business owners featured in the series inspire viewers to turn their passions into profit. Biz Kid$ airs on WXXI-TV (DT21.1/cable 1011/cable11) on Fridays at 5:30 p.m. and Sundays at 10:30 a.m., and on more than 330 public television stations across the country.

In addition to thetelevision series, Biz Kid$ features a website and activities, which can be used by educators in conjunction with the show. The free curriculum, which has been presented to over a million students, corresponds with every episode of the television show and includes five core components in Spanish. These can be downloaded from the show’s official website,, which also offers other resources and a monthly newsletter. In addition to classroom use, Biz Kid$ lessons are taught by credit union professionals and volunteers and through after-school programs such as Boys and Girls Clubs, DECA clubs and Girl Scouts in communities across the country.

Biz Kid$ is distributed by American Public Television. Major funding for Biz Kid$ is provided by a coalition of America’s Credit Unions. Biz Kid$ is locally underwritten by ESL Federal Credit Union.

The Environmental Media Association (EMA) recognizes work in just seven categories, honoring film and television personalities, productions, musicians and musical tours that convey environmental messages in the most creative and influential ways. Categories include Feature Film, Television Episodic Comedy, Television Episodic Drama, Reality Primetime Program, Children's Animated Program, Children's Live Action TV Program, and Documentary.
