WXXI AND BIZ KID$ PRESENT A LIVE TV SPECIAL FOCUSING ON YOUTH FINANCIAL LITERACY IN “LET’S TALK ABOUT MONEY” ON APRIL 21

WXXI Invites Parents, Educators, and Students to be Part of its Studio Audience

Rochester, New York (April 8, 2009) – On Tuesday, April 21 at 8 p.m., a group of financial experts will discuss the importance of financial literacy among young people before a live studio audience at WXXI Public Broadcasting, 280 State Street, Rochester, NY. WXXI and its financial literacy series for kids, Biz Kid$, are proud to present this hour-long special, Let’s Talk About Money, in honor of financial literacy month. If you are interested in being part of the audience, or have questions for the panelists, please contact Shelley Figueroa at (585)-258-0278 or sfigueroa@wxxi.org.

Studies show that parents don’t talk about money with their children, and teachers don’t spend class time on basic financial concepts or vocabulary. In Let’s Talk About Money, airing Tuesday, April 21 at 8 p.m. on WXXI-TV 21 (cable 11) and WXXI-HD (DT21.1/cable 1011), WXXI’s managing editor Julie Philipp will moderate a panel discussion on financial literacy and how we can instill good financial habits in youth. Panelists include: Diane LaVigna Wixted, CFRE, CUDE, Executive Director, New York Credit Union Foundation (NYCUF); David J. Anderson, Executive Vice President, Working in Support of Education (WISE); Laytricia Towery, a staff member of the Home Store Program of the Urban League of Rochester; Gayle Jagel, Founder and CEO, Young Entrepreneurs Academy, Inc.; and Michael  A. Masiello, Personal Financial Planner and local instructor of Wi$eUp.

In support of the live TV special, WXXI will also dedicate special programming to the subject. This includes:

1370 Connection, which will preview and discuss the Let’s Talk About Money program on Tuesday, April 21 at 12 noon on AM1370/HD91.5-2.

Need to Know, which will present a segment on youth financial literacy and highlight material from Let’s Talk About Money on Friday, April 24 at 8:30 p.m., and repeats Sunday, April 26 at 12:30 p.m. on WXXI-TV/HD.

In addition, financial literacy segments will be produced to air on Assignment: The World, WXXI’s national current events series for students in 4th through 8th grade. These segments will air throughout April. In Rochester, Assignment: The World airs Thursdays and Fridays at 6 a.m. on WXXI-TV/HD.
