FREE SCREENING OF WXXI-PRODUCED JAZZ CONCERTS AT THE EASTMAN THEATRE ON JUNE 14 AS PART OF THE ROCHESTER INTERNATIONAL JAZZ FESTIVAL

Rochester, New York (March 26, 2009) – As part of the 8th annual Rochester International Jazz Festival, WXXI Public Broadcasting will present a free screening of its acclaimed television series At the Top on Sunday, June 14 beginning at 4 p.m. at the Eastman Theatre. In the mid-1970s, WXXI produced a series of one-hour jazz programs that were shown nationally on PBS. Most of the programs were filmed in Rochester’s Top of the Plaza, which is how the series got its name, At the Top.

AM1370’s Mostly Jazz host Tom Hampson will introduce the programs. Hampson was involved in the production of the At the Top series, and this June he will be celebrating his 50th year of playing jazz on the radio in Rochester.

The programs included in the Sunday, June 14 screening are:
At 4 p.m. – The Bill Evans Trio (Evans, piano; Chuck Israels, bass; Eliot Zigmond, drums) filmed at the Eastman Theater in a program exploring Evans’ repertoire.

At 5 p.m. – The orchestra of the late Maynard Ferguson in a high-energy session filmed at the Top of the Plaza.

At 6 p.m. – A special episode from the second season of WXXI’s Rochester International Jazz Festival series, which presents an overview of the 2008 festival and includes excerpts from many of the performances, street scenes and interviews with some of the musicians and jazz fans.

The screening is free and open to the public, but an opportunity to make a donation to the Eastman Jazz Scholarship Fund will be available during the event.
