U OF R YELLOWJACKETS A CAPPELLA GROUP TO APPEAR ON WXXI’S HOMEWORK HOTLINE NOVEMBER 17 AT 5:30 P.M. ON WXXI-TV/HD
Rochester, New York (November 8, 2011) – Just back from competing on NBC’s The Sing-Off, University of Rochester’s a cappella group, the YellowJackets, will join WXXI for a special Homework Hotline, airing Thursday, November 17 at 5:30 p.m. on WXXI-TV/HD (DT21.1/cable 1011 and 11). The group will share with Homework Hotline viewers what it was like competing on The Sing-Off, and will perform a few songs in studio.
The YellowJackets competed against 15 other groups on The Sing-Off for the chance to win $200,000 and a SONY Music recording contract. After an impressive run, they were eliminated from the show on October 31st.
The YellowJackets’ appearance on WXXI’s state-wide, live call-in show – where kids get homework help on the air – is part of the Homework Hotline’s year-long celebration of its 20th season. Designed for children in grades four through 12, the program provides the tools students need to succeed with homework, and supports academic achievement across a variety of New York State Learning Standards. Teachers from Rochester Dial-A-Teacher take students calls and send them to WXXI studios in Rochester. The host teachers, who are experts in subjects across the curriculum, are standing by to help kids work through homework assignments live on television. Homework Hotline is funded, in part, by the New York State United Teachers (NYSUT).
The YellowJackets are the oldest all-male a cappella group on the University of Rochester campus. Bearing the name of the University’s mascot, the YellowJackets formed in 1956 as a division of the men's glee club. The group has toured around the world, including Europe, Germany, and Japan, as well as the East and West Coast and the Southeast.
