Rochester, New York (October 24, 2011) – WRUR-FM 88.5 is now broadcasting with a new antenna, which has increased power to 15,100 watts, and has extended reach in the Greater Rochester area. The News/Triple-A radio station, operated by WXXI in partnership with the University of Rochester, can now be heard throughout Monroe County and parts of Ontario, Wayne and Livingston Counties. The signal is predicted to span within a 50-mile radius of Rochester, depending on terrain. NPR news programs such as Morning Edition and All Things Considered are balanced with "Triple-A" music to make up the core of WRUR's programming.

Funded in part by a grant from the Corporation for the Public Broadcasting, the new seven-panel, directional antenna is located on WXXI’s tower on Pinnacle Hill. The tower also houses antennas for WXXI-DT and WXXI-FM. WRUR-FM’s antenna is continuously fed 15,100 watts -- up from the previous 3,000 watts -- creating an Effective Radiated Power of 15.1 kW vertical and 15.1 kW horizontal.

WXXI and the University of Rochester Broadcasting Company entered an operation agreement in 2003 in an effort to strengthen both its services. The partnership has enabled AM 1370 to simulcast local and national programming on WRUR-FM, helping to fill open airtime on WRUR-FM. It also offers an opportunity for WXXI-AM, Rochester’s only NPR station, to broadcast on an FM frequency and serve people who may have difficulty accessing the AM signal, especially at times when WXXI-AM must “change pattern” at night to avoid interference with other AM radio stations. NPR is currently simulcast on WRUR-FM and WXXI-AM Monday-Friday from 5 a.m.-9 a.m. and 4 p.m.-6 p.m.

WRUR-FM is owned by University of Rochester Broadcasting Corporation and operated by WXXI in partnership with the student officers of the University’s radio club.
