BIZ KID$ EARNS THE 2012 PARENTS’ CHOICE AWARD
(Rochester, New York) April 27, 2012 – Public television’s financial literacy series Biz Kid$, co-produced by WXXI Public Broadcasting and Biz Kid$, LLP, received the 2012 Parents’ Choice Silver Honor Award. “Biz Kid$ offers a valuable and realistic education about the business world,” writes Gina Catanzarite, the writer, teacher and TV producer who reviewed Biz Kid$ for the award. The program has “tremendous value for all teens as they take on more responsibility for the money they earn from chores, jobs, or gifts.”
Biz Kid$ is a half-hour TV magazine aimed at increasing financial literacy among tweens and young teens. Using a clever blend of entertainment and education, each Biz Kid$ episode shows kids how to make and manage money by introducing concepts of financial literacy and entrepreneurship. To keep young viewers engaged, the series includes a fast-paced mix of direct education delivered by young actors, sketch comedies, animation, and stories featuring real-life young entrepreneurs. The show is complemented by a resource rich website, lesson plans, outreach activities, and a monthly electronic newsletter. The program premiered in January 2008 and has aired on more than 350 PBS affiliate stations around the U.S. In Rochester, it airs Fridays at 5:30 p.m. and Sundays at 10:30 a.m. on WXXI-TV/HD (DT 21.1/cable 1011 and 11).
The Parents' Choice Awards program honors the best material for children: books, toys, music and storytelling, magazines, software, videogames, television and websites. Parents' Choice Foundation's panels of educators, scientists, performing artists, librarians, parents and, yes, kids themselves, identify the very best products for children of different ages and backgrounds, and of varied skill and interest levels.
