(Rochester, New York) November 29, 2012 – As fans of the Emmy Award-winning Downton Abbey await the January 6th television premiere of Season 3, WXXI is pleased to bring the premiere episode to the big screen three weeks earlier! On Sunday, December 16 WXXI will host three screenings of Down Abbey’s season premiere at the Little Theatre, 240 East Avenue, Rochester. The screenings, which will be held in Theatre 1 at 12 p.m., 4 p.m. and 5:30 p.m., are free and open to the public, but seats are limited and reservations are required by calling (585) 258-0200.

Written and created by Julian Fellowes, Downton Abbey is a British-American, post-Edwardian drama series. Set in the fictional estate of Downton Abbey, the series delves into the lives of the aristocratic Crawley family and their servants.  The cast includes Hugh Bonneville, Dame Maggie Smith, Elizabeth McGovern, Dan Stevens, Michelle Dockery, Jim Carter, Penelope Wilton, Joanne Froggatt, Brendan Coyle and a host of others, joined by Shirley MacLaine (Oscar® for Best Actress, Terms of Endearment), who plays Martha Levinson, the very American mother of Cora, Countess of Grantham (McGovern).

Last season closed with the reluctant heir to Downton, Matthew Crawley (Stevens), recovered from his war wounds and ready to tie the knot with the eldest of Lord and Lady Grantham’s daughters, Lady Mary (Dockery). Meanwhile, Mary’s youngest sister, Sybil (Jessica Brown-Findlay), has traveled to Ireland with the political-minded chauffeur, Branson (Allen Leech), and is expecting a child.

Now, in Season 3, the Great War is over and the long-awaited engagement of Lady Mary and Matthew is on, but all is not tranquil at Downton Abbey as wrenching social changes, romantic intrigues, and person crises grip the majestic English country estates.

The television premiere of Downton Abbey Season 3 airs Sunday, January 6 at 9 p.m. on WXXI-TV/HD (DT 21.1/cable 1011 and 11). The series has won a total of nine Primetime Emmy® Awards and a Golden Globe® for Best Mini-Series.
