(Rochester, NY) September 19, 2012 – WXXI News has been granted exclusive behind-the-scenes access to document a collaborative project between Tony award-winning choreographer Garth Fagan and Grammy Award-wining musician and composer Wynton Marsalis. The pair joined forces twenty years ago for Griot New York, and now they’re doing it again as they premiere Lighthouse/Lightning Rod attheBrooklyn Academy of Music (BAM) on September 27, 2012.  The concept and choreography were created by Fagan. The original music was composed and arranged by Marsalis.

WXXI News will be there, every step of the way, capturing the project to fruition and sharing it with the Rochester community through news reports, interviews and special segments on AM 1370, WXXI-TV/HD and at In addition to rehearsals and performances, WXXI will gather interviews with industry leaders, media critics, art historians, and others who will share the significance of this collaboration and the work of these two artists.

Marsalis is currently in Rochester and will be spending several days working with Fagan and his dancers as they bring his score to life in the studio on Chestnut Street.  Fagan’s company will head to New York City to begin rehearsals at BAM, beginning September 25. The show opens on Thursday, September 27 at BAM’s Howard Gilman Opera House.

  • Friday, October 5 at 8:30 p.m. on WXXI-TV/HD: Need to Know Rochester recaps the opening night in New York City.  In addition to the performance, Garth Fagan is being honored for his achievements at a star-studded gala chaired by Marsalis – and WXXI will be there.
  • Monday, November 26, 8 p.m. – Need to Know Rochester special edition presents a special on Garth Fagan and Wynton Marsalis with footage from the premiere of Lighthouse/Lightning Rod.
