WXXI INVITES ROCHESTER TO “GO PUBLIC” AT ITS OPEN HOUSE ON SEPTEMBER 15, 2012
A Fun, Free Day of Activities for The Whole Family to Enjoy
Rochester, New York (September 5, 2012) – WXXI invites the community to “Go Public” at a special Open House on Saturday, September 15, 2012. From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Rochester's Public Broadcasting station opens its doors at 280 State Street for a day a fun and discovery. The event is free and open to the public (with free parking in Kodak’s lot directly across from the station).
At the Open House, PBS Kids’ characters including Cat in the Hat from The Cat in the Hat Knows a Lot About That, Arthur from Arthur, the Big Red Dog and the Curious Little Monkey will welcome kids of all ages. Guests will also have a chance to meet WXXI radio and TV hosts, talk with the program director about PBS’s upcoming fall season, walk the sets of Homework Hotline and Assignment: The World, see Open Tunings’ host Scott Regan produce his Saturday morning show, and learn more about WXXI and the Little Theatre partnership. There will be live music, courtyard performances, and lots of interactive activities from community partners, including the Rochester Education Foundation (REF) who will be showcasing their music education program Spring for Music and collecting used or new musical instruments at the event.
Since 1958 WXXI has provided the greater Rochester area with the finest radio and television programming available. Today, WXXI operates four television stations: WXXI-TV/HD, WXXI-Create, WXXI-WORLD , and City 12, plus three radio stations: AM 1370, WXXI-FM 91.5/90.3, WRUR-FM 88.5 (in partnership with the University of Rochester), along with two HD radio channels and Reachout Radio, a closed circuit 24-hour radio reading service for those who are visually impaired. WXXI also manages two radio stations in partnership with Hobart and William Smith Colleges – WEOS-FM 89.7 in Geneva, NY and WITH-FM 90.1 in Ithaca, NY. WXXI’s Web site (WXXI.org) features streaming of its radio services, TV and radio schedules, podcasts, blogs, video and online forums. In 2011 WXXI and the Little Theatre joined in a long-term affiliation.
WXXI Educational Services include: instructional programming and local educational productions for use by families and schools; video on-demand services for schools and families; Ready To Learn programming to prepare young children for school success; training for parents, teachers, and childcare providers on using media to improve education; Adult literacy services with area agencies to provide GED Connections and workforce development programming; training for adult literacy agencies.
