(Rochester, NY) October 9, 2013 – In late August Bob Smith, host of 1370 Connection, announced he was stepping down from the midday talk show. This past April, Smith suffered a stroke and is currently in long-term rehabilitative care. To honor Bob and his more than 25 years of service leading the community in civic engagement and civil discourse, WXXI presents  1370 Connection: A Tribute to Bob Smith on Thursday, October 17 from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. on WXXI-AM 1370.

The two-hour special will include excerpts from a series of interviews with Smith that was conducted by WXXI Radio Vice President Jeanne Fisher over the past month. In these conversations, Bob talks about growing up in Rochester, his years studying at Cornell University, getting started in radio at WBEN in Buffalo, coming to WXXI to host 1370 Connection, and his future after WXXI.

Listeners will be invited to call the talk show hotline during the program (263-9994) to share their reflections. There will also be tributes from Bob Smith’s regular guests, as well as his WXXI and community colleagues.

Smith holds a Ph.D. in American political and legal history from Cornell and taught undergraduate American political and diplomatic history courses to Cornell undergraduate students. After graduation he began his radio career at WBEN in Buffalo, and joined WXXI in March of 1988.

Over the years, he has interviewed many newsmakers and opinion leaders, including Hillary Rodham Clinton, Rudolph Giuliani, Mario Cuomo, Dave Brubeck, and B.B. King. His work has been recognized by the New York State Associated Press Broadcasters Association, the George M. Ewing Canandaigua Forum, the United Nations Association of Rochester, the Rochester Rotary Club and the Rochester Chamber of Commerce.

The special 1370 Connection: A Tribute to Bob Smith will be broadcast on Thursday, October 17 from 12 noon to 2p.m. on WXXI-AM 1370 and WXXI-FM 91.5 HD2.
