For Immediate Release

(Rochester, New York) June 11, 2014 – Listeners of public radio in Rochester and Finger Lakes can now listen to their favorite NPR stations on iTunes Radio. WXXI is one of the first 42 public radio stations across the country to roll out its own channels – AM 1370 (Rochester), WRUR-FM 88.5 (Rochester) and WEOS-FM 98.5 (Geneva) – within the Apple streaming service. Now listeners can get WXXI and NPR News, plus the local programs that matter to them wherever and whenever they'd like.

To use iTunes Radio, users must have iOS 7 or OS X Lion v10.7 or later, iTunes 11.1, or Apple TV 6.0 or later installed on their mobile device or computer, as well as an Apple ID for use in the iTunes Store. To find WXXI’s streams on iTunes Radio, users can launch the Music Player app on your iPhone, iPad or Mac, tap the Radio tab and search for WXXI, WRUR or WEOS, and "add" that station to their personal "My Stations" list. For more information and tips on how to access this new service, visit: http://wxxi.org/itunes-radio.

The iTunes Radio service enhances WXXI’s current online offerings, which include:

• Live streaming of its radio stations at WXXI.org/listen,
• A free WXXI app for the iPhone or Droid that lets users listen to their favorite WXXI radio stations,
• Podcasts of local programs at WXXI.org/podcasts,
• A WXXI Video player, at video.wxxi.org, that lets users watch a selection of PBS and WXXI programming.

WXXI will continue to evolve its iTunes Radio service over the next several months, aiming to provide listeners with the best experience possible and develop inventive ways to further the mission of public radio and reach new listeners.
In March 2014 NPR became the first news provider on iTunes Radio, launching the first stage of its three-phase initiative with Apple. The second phase was to offer digital streams to select NPR Member Stations across the county, which included WXXI. The final phase is to offer streams to the remaining 250+ NPR Member Stations. A date for the final phase has yet to be set.

WXXI is the essential, life-long educational media resource for the Greater Rochester area. WXXI puts the community first with programming that stimulates and expands thought, inspires the spirit, opens cultural horizons and promotes understanding of diverse community issues. The formal affiliation between WXXI and the Little Theatre, established in December 2011, enables the two organizations to work more efficiently by pooling resources and strengths in a number of areas including back-office operation and improved fundraising capabilities.  Log on to wxxi.org for more information about our services and programs.
