Thursday, May 10 at 12 p.m. – The Metropolitan Opera 2012 National Council Grand Finals Concert

(Rochester, NY) Eastman School of Music tenor Matthew Grills was one of five winners of the Metropolitan Opera’s 2012 National Council Auditions.Eastman School of Music tenor Matthew Grills was one of five winners of the Metropolitan Opera’s 2012 National Council Auditions. As one of ten finalists, he performed onstage at the Met in The Metropolitan Opera 2012 National Council Grand Finals Concert, which airs Thursday, May 10 at 12 p.m. on Classical 91.5/FM-HD 91.5-1.

Grills is a second year master’s degree student at the Eastman School of Music. He was the winner of Eastman’s 2011 Jessie Kneisel Lieder Competition and received third place in the 2011 Friends of Eastman Opera Voice Competition. At Eastman he has performed the role of Jamie in The Last Five Years by Jason Robert Brown, the dual role of the Balladeer/Lee Harvey Oswald in Eastman Opera Theatre’s production of Assassins, and the role of Jenik in Eastman’s recent production of The Bartered Bride. After graduating from the Eastman School of Music this May, Grills will spend the summer in the Santa Fe Opera Apprentice Program, and will begin a year-long long residency with the Portland Opera in the fall. As a winner of the Met’s National Council Auditions, Grills will receive a cash award of $15,000.

The Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions is a program designed to discover promising young opera singers and assist in the development of their careers. Past awardees include Eastman graduate Renée Fleming, Susan Graham, Thomas Hampson, Ben Heppner, Jessye Norman, Samuel Ramey, Frederica von Stade, Deborah Voigt and Dolora Zajick. Annually, approximately 100 former auditioners appear in Metropolitan Opera productions.
