Monday, August 3 at 9 p.m. – Savage Planet

(Rochester, NY) – The planet Earth is full of awe- and terror-inspiring natural storms that threaten human existence on a daily basis, from the deadly snowfall of an avalanche to the boiling rock and lava of a volcanic explosion and the airborne bombardment of meteors. This special profiles these deadly storms through eyewitness accounts, scientific investigations, and remarkable video footage. Savage Planet airs Monday, August 3 through Thursday, August 6 at 9 p.m. on WXXI-TV (DT21.1/cable1011/cable11).

This four-part series explores several of the earth’s most destructive phenomena. In episode one, Volcanic Killers (airing 8/3), the dangerous and deadly secrets of volcanoes are revealed. Episode two, Storms of the Century (airing 8/4), details the devastating 1993 extra-tropical cyclone that ravaged the East Coast of the United States, killing more people than Hurricanes Andrew and Hugo combined.

The looming threat from the earth’s atmosphere is the subject of the series’ third episode Deadly Skies (airing 8/5). There is the ever-present danger of killer lightning and property-destroying hail, as well as the potential for a planet-crushing apocalypse with a destructive meteor. In the series’ final episode, Extremes, Savage Planet (airing 8/6), earth’s most unforgiving lands—from high mountains in the depth of winter to California’s Death Valley, the hottest, driest, and lowest place in North America.

Narrated by acclaimed actor Stacy Keach, Savage Planet is a gripping documentary about the stunning beauty and savage power of the earth.
