Thursday, January 21 at 9:30 p.m. –Living with Fragile X

(Rochester, NY) – The most common cause of inherited mental disability and the leading known cause of autism, Fragile X syndrome appears in approximately 1 in 2000 males and 1 in 4000 females.

As part of its annual Dialogue on Disability: The Herman & Margaret Schwartz Community Series, WXXI and Al Sigl Community of Agencies are pleased to present Living with Fragile X, airing Thursday, January 21 at 9:30 p.m. on WXXI-TV (DT21.1/cable1011/cable11), reveals a new view of those in our society that are traditionally considered “flawed” or “abnormal”. Who decides what’s normal? Because an individual is different than you and me, should he or she be “fixed”? Living with Fragile X takes a rare and intimate look at the lives of several families who live with a member affected by fragile X syndrome.

Living with Fragile X explains what fragile X is and how it is passed, exposes the day-to-day challenges faced by those who have fragile X and reveals the frustrations of parents and their fears for what the future holds.

Dialogue on Disability: The Herman & Margaret Schwartz Community Series, a partnership between WXXI and Al Sigl Community of Agencies, is a week-long outreach initiative designed to stimulate community dialogue about the perspectives and abilities of people with disabilities. At the heart of this initiative is programming broadcast on WXXI-TV and AM 1370 that celebrates the amazing lives of people with disabilities. Dialogue on Disability runs January 18-24.
