Friday, May 7 at 5:30 p.m. – Songs of Freedom

(Rochester, NY) Songs of Freedom, airing Friday, May 7 at 5:30 p.m. on WXXI-TV (DT21.1/cable 1011 and 11), combines history, storytelling and music together in a half-hour action film about the Underground railroad. The film, produced by Rochester-based Blue Sky Project, follows a young girl named Imani, and her family as they attempt freedom by escaping slavery on foot, train and by their own wits. Storyteller Phyllis Wade narrates.

This WXXI presentation of Songs of Freedom is in partnership with the
360 | 365 George Eastman House Film Festival. The film is part of the Festival's MADE IN ROCHESTER series, a selection of recent local works, and will screen at the Little Theatre on Thursday, May 6 at 6:45 p.m.

Songs of Freedom is a multi-media, interactive, educational project that uses text, video, storytelling, and contemporary music to engage students and enrich learning. The project includes a companion book of the same name authored by Rochester's David Marshall and Dr. Bryan Marshall, as well as a CD and Web site. Reaching from hot plantation fields, across stormy waters to sweet freedom on Canada’s shores, the project embraces the most contemporary scholarship available to share the latest knowledge about this important part of our nation’s history.
