Monday, May 21 at 10 p.m. Prince Philip at 90

(Rochester, NY) – The longest serving consort in British history, Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, has been at Queen Elizabeth's side for nearly 60 years. During those decades he has worked with more than 800 organizations, and has been a champion of the environmental movement since its earliest days.WXXI celebrates the Duke with Prince Philip at 90, airing Monday, May 21, 2012 at 10 p.m. on WXXI-TV/HD (DT21.1/cable 1011 and 11).

Once sixth in line to the Greek throne, Philip's family fled Greece and lived in exile in France after the forced abdication of the king not long after Philip's birth in 1921. He met his future wife Elizabeth, a third cousin, when she was 13 and he was 18, and when they married in 1947, he was a Lieutenant Commander in the Royal Navy. However, the death of Elizabeth's father, King George, ended that career abruptly and cast him into the role of consort to the queen, a duty which he has carried out ever since.

With an interview of the duke by Alan Titchmarsh at its center, Prince Philip at 90 uncovers a side of the duke that is little known — from the personal jewelry he has designed for the queen, to the painstaking renovation of Windsor Castle after the fire in 1992. Testimony of those who know the prince well and revealing archives give an insight into the man himself. Interviewees include Princess Anne, cousins HM King Constantine, Countess Mountbatten of Burma, and Lady Myra Butter, royal biographers Gyles Brandreth and Hugo Vickers, and sculptor Frances Segelman. An intriguing look at one of the royalty's most captivating figures, Prince Philip at 90 is an unforgettable biographical special.
