Sunday, November 7 at 7p.m. – Rock Prophecies
(Rochester, NY) – Featuring unexpected turns and transcendent performances, Rock Prophecies goes behind the ropes and beyond the green rooms to view rock and roll through the eyes of prolific photographer Robert M. Knight. Airing Sunday, November 7 at 7 p.m. on WXXI-TV/HD (DT21.1/cable 1011 and 11), the film tells Knight's story of professional survival and private redemption. Crossing the line of detached photographer, Knight immerses himself in the careers of new artists, actively helping them catch a break in their pursuit of rock stardom.
Knight launched his 40-year career in 1968 with a line-up of now-legendary guitar heroes — Jeff Beck, Jimi Hendrix and Led Zeppelin — as his first subjects, and went on to capture images of some of the greatest figures in rock and roll history. During the documentary, many of Knight’s subjects (also friends) share their thoughts about the photographer in exclusive, illuminating interviews, including Jeff Beck, Slash, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, ZZ Top, Robert Cray, Carlos Santana, Def Leppard and many others.
Knight has one of the largest rock and roll archives in the world, but few knew just how extensive the archive was, or how important it would become to him for highly personal, painful reasons. The sheer volume of images is the result of Knight’s obsession for not only experiencing music, but forging friendships with those who make it. Never considering himself to be creative, Knight gained access to the world of rock and roll through the lens of his camera. From his perspective, we get a front row seat at thunderous concerts and intimate portraits of inspired originality.
Shedding a light on what he calls the “archetypes of rock and roll guitar players,” the photography of Robert Knight reveals his subjects in all manner of simple human and sonically superhuman endeavors. As he overcomes his self-doubt and fights to maintain his relevance, we become immersed in his own story of professional survival and private redemption. Crossing the line of detached photographer, Knight immerses himself in the careers of new artists, actively helping them catch a break in the pursuit of rock stardom. It is in this capacity, in a small Texas town, where the prophetic words of Stevie Ray Vaughn take on a deeper significance.
Acclaimed documentary filmmaker John Chester brings us a wide-eyed, ear-popping experience that takes us behind the ropes, beyond the green room, and through the eyes of a conflicted photographer turned rock n’ roll sage. With unexpected turns and transcendent performances, we are taken on a wild, joyous, and surprisingly touching ride. In the end, one need not be a guitar fanatic to find fascination in Rock Prophecies.
