Sunday, October 16 at 7 p.m. – Demystifying Dyslexia
(Rochester, NY) –Demystifying Dyslexia, airing Sunday, October 16 at 7 p.m. on WXXI-TV 21 (cable 11) and WXXI-HD (cable 1011 and DT 21.1)sheds light on an often misunderstood learning difficulty that is increasingly being recognized as a public health issue. An estimated 10-15 percent of the population suffers to some degree from dyslexia, making it the most common learning disability.
Through personal stories, educational best practices and the latest scientific research, Demystifying Dyslexia, produced by Lloyd Fales, takes viewers on a journey of discovery about the challenges of living and learning with the disability. Olympic gold medalist Bruce Jenner, who is dyslexic, hosts.
“Dyslexics find reading and writing so challenging because it is difficult for them to make the connection between letters and the sounds they make,” explains Pamela Johnson, Ph.D., WNED Vice President of Education & Outreach. “Unless the condition is recognized and dealt with early, otherwise bright children may experience frustration, low self esteem and even failure in an academic world not geared to their learning style. Significantly, techniques that teach reading in different ways can help dyslexics approach the task differently—and successfully.”
