Monday, September 13 at 5:30 p.m. Homework Hotline

(Rochester, NY) Homework Hotline, WXXI’s live statewide call-in show where kids receive help with homework problems right on the air, gears up for its 20th season when it premieres on Monday, September 13 at 5:30 p.m. on WXXI-TV (DT21.1/cable1011/cable11) and on PBS stations across New York State. Designed for children in grades four through 12, Homework Hotline provides the tools students need to succeed with homework, and supports academic achievement across a variety of New York State Learning Standards. Teachers from Rochester Dial-A-Teacher and New York City Dial-A-Teacher take the calls and send them to WXXI studios in Rochester, where host teachers, who are experts in subjects across the curriculum, are standing by ready to help kids work through their homework assignments live on television.

After the premiere broadcast, Homework Hotline will air Monday – Thursday at 5:30 p.m. on WXXI-TV (DT21.1/cable1011/cable 11) throughout the school year. In addition to providing homework help, the show presents daily thematic segments on animals, book reviews, history, environment issues and people and places in New York State. This season Homework Hotline presents a new series of Healthy You segments, which are designed to educate young viewers on ways to improve their health. Hosted by kids, these segments are made possible with support from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. The information gained from these segments demonstrates why WXXI is your source for leading a healthy lifestyle.

The program also hosts a companion Web site at www.homeworkhotline.org, which earned a 2008 Parents’ Choice Award. The Award honors the best material for children: books, toys, music and storytelling, magazines, software, videogames, television and Websites. The Web site features a video player where visitors can search, by subject matter, segments from the show, interactive games, and homework help tips, a list of educational links, broadcast schedules, teacher host bios, and educational and entertaining features.

Produced by WXXI Public Broadcasting in Rochester, New York, Homework Hotline has garnered nine New York State Broadcasters Association awards for best program or series designed for children, plus a 2010 MySource Education Innovation Award from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, Silver Telly, Bronze Telly, an Aurora award.  Homework Hotline is funded in part by the New York State United Teachers (NYSUT).
