Thursday, January 15 at 10:30 p.m. Demystifying Dyslexia

(Rochester, NY) Demystifying Dyslexia, airing Thursday, January 15 at 10:30 p.m. on WXXI-TV 21 (cable 11) and WXXI-HD (cable 1011 and DT 21.1) as part of Dialogue on Disability week, sheds light on an often misunderstood learning difficulty that is increasingly being recognized as a public health issue. An estimated 10-15 percent of the population suffers to some degree from dyslexia, making it the most common learning disability.

Through personal stories, educational best practices and the latest scientific research, Demystifying Dyslexia, produced by Lloyd Fales, takes viewers on a journey of discovery about the challenges of living and learning with the disability. Olympic gold medalist Bruce Jenner, who is dyslexic, hosts.

“Dyslexics find reading and writing so challenging because it is difficult for them to make the connection between letters and the sounds they make,” explains Pamela Johnson, Ph.D., WNED Vice President of Education & Outreach. “Unless the condition is recognized and dealt with early, otherwise bright children may experience frustration, low self esteem and even failure in an academic world not geared to their learning style. Significantly, techniques that teach reading in different ways can help dyslexics approach the task differently—and successfully.”

WXXI and Al Sigl Center will host a week-long programming initiative to stimulate community dialogue about the perspectives and abilities of people with disabilities. Now in its 7th year, Dialogue on Disability: The Herman & Margaret Schwartz Community Series includes a week of special programming on WXXI-TV, WXXI-HD, City 12 and AM 1370/HD 91.5-2 beginning Sunday, January 11. Dialogue on Disability is made possible thanks to support from the Fred L. Emerson Foundation.
