DIAZ
Chemical Spill
On
January 5, 2002, at approximately 10:45 PM, the DIAZ Chemical Company
facility located in Holley, New York experienced a pressure build-up
in a chemical process tank which resulted in a chemical discharge
that visibly contaminated the area in the nearby neighborhood. Odors
were reported as far away as 12 miles.
Diaz reported that approximately 80 gallons of a liquid mixture
containing water, toluene and 2-chloro-6-fluorohpenol was released.
As many as twenty families voluntarily evacuated their homes by
the evening of January 6, 2002. DIAZ is covering the temporary relocation
costs for these families.
In a letter sent to the residents living in the nearby neighborhood,
DIAZ states that the chemical discharge occurred due to an operator
failing to open a vent valve on the vessel. Also, while further
investigation continues into the accident, DIAZ has halted production
of the chemical involved in the release (2-chloro-6-fluorophenol).
Need To Know investigates what is being done as part of the
on-going investigation as well as the role of local environmental
and health agencies. The Holley residents want answers and well
talk with some folks about their questions and concerns.
