Budget
Vote Aftermath
It
was a unanimous decision. Last Thursday night the Rochester City
School District voted to cut more jobs in order to operate on a
balanced budget for the remainder of this school year. Some programs
that were slated for cuts prior to Thursdays meeting, such
as the Young Mothers program, will remain in tact but not without
the loss of three positions. The approved plan eliminates 78 teacher
and counselor positions.
The Teachers Union votes this week on the proposal passed by the
school board.
Mayor William Johnson is frustrated with the slow response by Superintendent
Clifford Janey to correct the budget errors found earlier in the
school year. Janey said the process of looking at next years
budget to determine future challenges will begin this week. Janey
has already stated that more layoffs can be expected for next year.
Need to Know goes inside one city school to find out how
its students and staff may be affected and what may happen
next year. Need to Know will hold a panel discussion with
Rochester City School District leaders and local government representatives
to find out whats on the horizon for next years school
budget and Albany might respond.
