Urban Rez: On-Demand

Urban Rez explores the controversial legacy & modern-day effects of the US Government’s assimilation policy to dismantle the Indian Reservation system by relocating American Indians from their rural homelands to urban areas. Stories from many tribal nations speak to the challenges of maintaining one’s own culture within the dominant society.

Urban Rez explores the repercussions of the Urban Relocation Program (1952-1973), the greatest voluntary upheaval of Native Americans during the 20th century. During the documentary, dozens of American Indians representing tribal groups from across the West recall their first-hand experiences with relocation, including the early hardships, struggles with isolation and racism.

Interviewees also speak about the challenges of maintaining one’s own tribal traditions — from language to hunting — while assimilating into the larger society. Actor, musician and Oglala Lakota member Moses Brings Plenty narrates this insightful film about this seldom-told chapter in American history.

Norm & Company: Dan Meyers On-Demand

One of Rochester’s most well-known non-profit leaders, Dan Meyers joins WXXI President Norm Silverstein for an episode of Norm & Company, a series where long-time Rochesterians recount fascinating stories about their lives in our community. 

Meyers shares stories of his 30-year career at Al Sigl Community of Agencies. As president of Al Sigl he has leveraged and expanded the bold vision of the people who founded the organization in 1962. Meyers retires from Al Sigl this June, and in this episode of Norm & Company he reflects on his career and talks about he plans for the future.

Norm & Company is a half-hour series hosted by WXXI President Norm Silverstein. In each episode, Silverstein speaks with a long-time Rochester residents who shares stories about growing up and living in Western New York..

Norm & Company: Naomi Silver On-Demand

WXXI-TV presents an encore of this episode with Naomi Silver, President, COO, and CEO of the Rochester Red Wings and Rochester Community Baseball Inc.

In this episode,  Silver talks about her family, the history of the Rochester Red Wings, business requirements for running a professional sports organization, how much baseball means to her, and the future for her franchise.

Silver is one of few women who own a professional sports team. She has been a board member of the International League of Professional Baseball Clubs since 1993 and has significantly impacted the tradition of baseball in Rochester. She has always emphasized that the community comes first.  Her professional and volunteer accomplishments have been recognized throughout Greater Rochester. 

In 2016, Silver was honored with the Woerner Kollmorgen Award for Community Service.  In 2008 she was awarded Minor Executive of the Year by Baseball America, being the first woman to ever receive this award.  In 2007 she was inducted into the Red Wings Hall of Fame.

Norm & Company is hosted by WXXI President Norm Silverstein, who speaks with long-time Rochesterians as they recount fascinating stories about their lives in the community.

Growing Up Trans: On-Demand

Just a generation ago, it was adults, not kids, who changed genders.

But today, many children are transitioning, too–with new medical options, and at younger and younger ages. Growing Up Trans takes viewers on an intimate and eye-opening journey inside this new frontier–where it’s now possible for kids who feel they were born in the wrong body to never have to go through the puberty of their biological sex. Frontline: Growing Up Trans explores the journey of children and families. 

Told from the perspective of parents, doctors, and, most revealing of all, eight transgender kids themselves, ranging in ages from 9 to 19, Frontline takes a powerful look at this new generation, exploring the medical possibilities, struggles, and choices transgender kids and their families face today. With extraordinary access to the gender program at Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago, filmmakers Miri Navasky and Karen O’Connor examine the complicated and often controversial treatments now available to gender non-conforming and transgender kids, and explore the deeply personal emotional issues many parents and families face.

Eastman at 100: A Centennial Celebration On-Demand

Take a look back at the story of Eastman School of Music and how George Eastman’s vision for a school dedicated to scholarship, musicianship, and an inclusive community campus came to be. 

Filmed over the course of three years, Eastman at 100 follows individual students throughout their academic year, offering a firsthand look at their transformational experiences. Eastman’s story is told through intimate interviews with professors, administrators, staff, community partners, and high-profile alumni, including:

  • World-renowned, Grammy-winning soprano Renée Fleming ’83 (MM), ’11 (Honorary)
  • Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Kevin Puts ’94, ’99E (DMA)
  • Grammy-winning drummer Steve Gadd ’68, ’17 (Honorary)
  • Grammy-nominated jazz composer and conductor Maria Schneider ’85 (MM)
  • Retired “Voice of the Met” and former WXXI Classical host Mary Jo Heath ’88 (Ph.D.)
